When I was in my 20's there were two criterion that had to be met when it came to things I purchased for myself. It had to be cute and it had to be cheap. I could be a bit shallow and vapid at times. So basically I bought the cheap wine with the cute label and I bought the shoes because they were trendy, who cares if I had to hobble and wobble while I walked in them..While in my 20's I was also on birth control, which took a toll on my body through the years.

Once I reached my thirties, I began to think about all of the products and foods that are in our house and how they could affect our health. After the birth of my second child I vowed to be more intentional and educated about what myself and my family consume and use. I wanted to make small changes in our lives that would lead us all on the path to a more green lifestyle. Changes that were not overwhelming, but still meaningful. Here are five things I have done to try to make our household a bit more environmentally friendly...not to mention human friendly!

Albeit, this is an obvious one...but in my early 20's there were entire days where not one vegetable touched my mouth...unless it was the form of french fries or hash browns.  You can get away with that when you are in your early twenties...How I did not weigh three hundred pounds in college, I will never know.  Now that I am in my 30's I understand and acknowledge the importance of a well balanced diet and actually prefer lots of veggies with supper.  I want to be healthy for my children and future grandbabies.  I want my family to be healthy and live life to the max, not feel sluggish and tired from eating junk food.  Eating fresh veggies is not only healthy for you, but healthy for our planet.  For an extra green bonus, opt for reusable bags versus plastic when you go grocery shopping for your veggies.  The environment will thank you!

I have been slowly switching out our cleaning supplies for ones that are made with plant based ingredients. I look for cleaners that are safe around kids and pets and that are fragrance free or scented using essential oils and other natural products. Seventh Generation™ makes some awesome cleaning products from window cleaner and wood cleaner to laundry detergent and fabric softener. I also make my own cleaners using vinegar and lemon along with essential oils as well.

Over the years, I have become more conscious of all of the ingredients that are in tampons and other feminine care products. I have since switched to using more plant based feminine products like Seventh Generation™ Comfort Applicator Tampons that I purchased at Target. The comfort applicator tampons are a new product and use only organic cotton and plant based plastics. I also really like their Free & Clear fragrance-free Ultra-Thin Pads with Wings and Free & Clear Pantiliners. The "Free & Clear" label means the product does not have any sort of fragrance of chlorine processing. If the product has a fragrance, Seventh Generation only uses natural plant essential oils so you can rest easy knowing there are no harsh chemicals in their products. You can find any of the feminine products mentioned above in the feminine care aisle at Target or online at, and make sure to check Cartwheel for money saving offers!

I am addicted to fragrance. In college, I would burn three candles in one room. It would be so intense that the walls of my apartment smelled like the candles and when I had visitors, they left with their clothes smelling like vanilla buttercream. As I've gotten older, I have read about the effects candle burning can have on the quality of air that we breathe in our home, so I reduced my candle burning habit dramatically. Instead, I diffuse a lot of essential oils and also simmer lemons, rosemary and vanilla extract with water on the stove. These are all natural ways to get your house smelling cozy and inviting without adding all the toxins to the air.

Over the years my family has made a conscious effort to keep electronics turned off. Before I had children, I kept the TV on even when I wasn't watching it. My computer would be left on and I would constantly be on my phone. I was burning a lot of electricity with all the screens on around me. We began to see how hypnotized our son would get looking at the TV. He would zone out and not blink, it was creepy. Because of this, we decided to be more intentional about what we watch. We make plans as to what we are going to watch, and when we do not have anything planned to watch, we keep the TV off instead of constantly running it in the background. Minimizing the amount of utilities used in the household is a great way to live a more green life. Turning off screens and lights usually means one thing...going outside!

Seventh Generation™ feminine products, along with the other lifestyle changes mentioned, has allowed me to make the best choices for me and my family. It is important that we take care of ourselves as caregivers for our family! If you don't believe me, at least listen to Maya Rudolph...
