Struggles of a baseball mom...

Being a baseball mom is my favorite...my very, very favorite.  I truly mean that.  I have loved watching my son play ball for the last three years.  This season has been the most fun yet, as he is on a travel ball team that really ups the ante when it comes to playing.  The amount in which Bubba has improved since he joined his travel ball team is astounding.  I love watching him be coached and then seeing him apply those lessons learned.  But, lets be honest...being a baseball mom has its struggles...

Y'all, the amount of laundry that our household has is ridiculous.  On top of that, actually getting his baseball gear clean requires bleach and teardrops of a unicorn.  White baseball pants look so sharp out on the field...but actually getting them to look crisp and white after even one use, is literally impossible...unless, again, you have a bottle of unicorn teardrops.  You think I am kidding...

Having an almost walking 11 month old on the sidelines with you as you cheer on your oldest on the field is so much fun...but it also requires eyes of a hawk and telepathy.  I have to be able to gauge exactly what she is going to try and put in her mouth before she does it, while watching and cheering on my son.  I have to pack LOADS of snacks, sunscreen and toys...not to mention diapers and wipes.  In between the games, I try to get Vivian to nap...which usually means I have to go to the car with her because, well parents get excited when their kids are on the field...which usually leads to L O T S of yelling and clapping. I don't blame them one bit!  I am the same way when it comes to cheering on Bubba!

Bubba gets frustrated with himself in the face of defeat.  He is having to learn a lot of new skills and there is a lot more pressure in travel ball.  The talent on the team is incredible, including my son's.  He is a great player, but still has a lot to learn.  While myself, my husband and his coaches see the progress he has made and what a coachable player he is...For Bubba, it's all or nothing.  He has the same mentality as Ricky Bobby from Talladega Nights...If you ain't first, you're last...

...So, it has been hard to find the right way to talk to him about his struggles. I know that over time, he will gain confidence and skills and that he will begin to see his progress and be proud of it.  I have always said, the beauty is in the struggle.  Winning would not feel as amazing as it does, if there was not struggle and hard work behind it...Try telling that to a six year old, though...

I wouldn't change being a baseball mama for anything in the world.  I love seeing my son be on a team with his friends getting to play one of his favorite sports.  I also really love the group of parent friends I have on that team.  We have so much fun cheering on our boys together.  No matter how much laundry, baby tantrums or game losses we go through I am so proud to be a baseball mom.  More importantly, I am so proud of my son and all of his hard work and determination.

Props to all the sports moms out there. I know exactly what y'all go through and what all you give up in order to get your kids to practices, buy their equipment and uniforms and get them to all the tournaments.  It's not easy, but it is an amazing experience!
