Lunch Box Documentary - West & Rose Farm

Lunch Box Documentary

School Lunches...This is something that I had forgotten to expect when preparing for my son to enter Kindergarten at an elementary school. His lunches were provided by his previous school and while they did not seem like the best meals in the world, they were generally not fried or laden with salt.  Now that he is attending elementary school there is a cafeteria and while I think they probably serve some of the best food in the county (county, not country...) the menu still includes items like Crispitos and Chicken Fried Steak...oh and a roll is an option on the vegetable side options...needless to say, I decided my only choice was to make Bubba's lunches everyday.

There is a lot of pressure in this.  The pressure I put on myself to make sure lunches are healthy, while also being fun and creative....and also making sure it is food Bubba will actually eat and can eat in about 30 minutes. There is also pressure to know what other kids are eating and to make sure your child feels apart of the lunch least some of the time anyway.

So far these are some of the lunches I have made:

Home-Packed Lunchables
Rolled Up Honey Ham (Applegate Farms or Nature's Choice)
Mild Cheddar (cut similar in size as the ham)
Ritz Crackers

Fruit Salad (Cut up Strawberries & Kiwi)
Homemade Peanut Butter Chocolate Bars

For his drink I use a Camelbak water bottle and fill it with water and a squirt of water enhancer...just so he doesn't feel completely left out at the lunch table with his buddies who are drinking Capri-Sun and Yoo-Hoo (BLECH, straight sugar!!)

Since I plan one menu per week (My brain can't take any more at the moment) I will swap out for PB&J sandwiches just to keep things from getting too dull at the end of the week.

Bubba has loved his lunches. He said occasionally he wants the cafeteria food, usually on the day mini corn dogs are being served, but overall he would rather have his packed lunches.

Check out my Pinterest board where I keep ideas for future lunchbox menus.
